Since the first visit to Bali in 1988 our family have always wanted to help the kids we saw on the street selling postcards and leather bands but we weren't quite sure how to do it. We know that many Australians visit Bali, love products made in Bali and want to help if they can. We worked on developing relationships with tailors that have small businesses and hat train and provide excellent facilities to their employees. We have set up relationships with several organisations on the ground which provide education for children who have been orphaned or are too poor to attend school. A goat breeding program in a small village which helps support the families to send the children to school and a centre for streetkids. We know that some of the softest, most supple and smooth sheepskin and lambskin leathers are found in Indonesia, so why not have our precious bags made in Bali. From there we developed and built relationships with organisations that have set up programs that educate, feed, bathe and house street kids all over the island.
The organisations on the ground in Bali are best placed to help and know what to provide the children locally in the most economical way. We, however can act globally. The connection between Australia and Bali is strong in terms of tourism, but we feel it could be stronger in terms of help.
Each and every one of our bags sold directly leads to a donation to these various organisations.
After being involved for many years in art, design and marketing with many years importing experience we decided to combine those talents and love of leather products with doing what we can to assist others. We are constantly sketching, observing and being inspired by bags and accessories from around the world from runways and from life.
We hope Tana & Hide can be the catalyst to bring some of these design ideas to our shores in our own way. Our bags are not highly decorated but are functional and in most cases convertible.
Based in Melbourne, Australia our team are designers, marketers and most importantly parents. Our managed, studio in Bali makes the bags.
